Anyone that owns a car should have access to this book. August 2, 2000 39 out of 40 found this review helpful
This well-written, comprehensive book contains an incredible amount of information about the workings of automobiles. The text is very readable, and it presumes no previous knowledge about automobiles or mechanics. Chapters on tools and basic electronics theory will appeal to beginners, while their subsequent chapters build on this knowledge and get quite in-depth.The fact that the book does not focus on specific makes and models makes it all the more valuable. Descriptions of the various automotive systems typically begin with a very broad overview, followed by a description of the various different types or subsystems available, and ultimately proceed to a great level of detail. This approach makes it very easy to understand the purpose of each system as a whole, without having to get into more technical details. Of course, if the reader chooses to proceed, very in-depth details are available and are presented just as clearly. The book is thoroughly and clearly illustrated. To cap it off, numerous photo sequences show technicians performing many of the procedures which are described in the text. I have successfully used this title as as a "how-to" book when working on my own car. Even if you do not work on your own automobile, however, you will find it useful to consult to help you understand just what your car (or mechanic) is trying to tell you. It is also useful to consult when considering the purchase of a new vehicle. Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach will easily pay for itself by helping you make the right decisions about your automobile. It also makes for a phenomenal coffee-table book for the armchair gearhead.
Great book July 13, 2002 Ricardo Belmontes (Trinidad and Tobago) 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
This book is like my automotive bible, I am from Trinidad and own my automtive shop, getting up to date in the automotive field here is a real problem, this book gave me the opportunity to better myself in my field. It also helped me to passed the A1 and A8 ASE certification in one try that was recently introduced into my country 1 year ago. I highly recommend this book to all interested in this field.
A must have for any level Auto Tech Student October 4, 2005 M. Uuereb (Tacoma, WA) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I've used this book for my Auto Tech classes and it is the most comprehensive auto tech manual out there. Very informative and highly detailed. Get the accompanying Tech Manual for hands on lessons and projects. No dissapointments!
A great student textbook April 13, 2004 Han Kim (Northridge) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
From a novice standpoint; it's excellent. Well, I practically grew-up in my dad's garage (like many of you) but never had formal training... I've just finished a 5 month training course at a trade school and this was one of the text books. Very well organized, easy to read, good illustrations, and it's a great overview of automotive systems in general. A solid introductory.
Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach July 10, 2005 Double J (Belleville, IL, USA) 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a textbook and can be quite technical in terms of the electronics, etc.. It is not for the casual reader, but is for someone who is serious about the subject. There is very detailed information on theory and operation of all the automotive systems. Main reason I purchased was it gives all the details along with great photographs in color. The book is high dollar, but you are paying for quality. This book gives you the knowledge that makes it easier to understand the specific repair manual for you automobile. This book pays for itself. You want both the basics and advanced topics, BUY IT. I suggest you do not buy this as a repair manual since each car is different in terms of component location.
